The Greek Orthodox Pentecost is celebrated as well as ‘Holy Spirit Monday’. Churches have special

celebrations, more services, you'll hear lots of church bells… but the night-clubs will be plenty of people!

The ‘Pentecost-Monday’ is affecting only the Greek public sector, not the private one. Shops, restaurants,

agencies, etc will be opened as usual; Public transportation will be like every normal working day.

Ferries going out to the islands are busy on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, and busy coming back

to the mainland on Monday, when pre-booking is advised.

The other days may be busy, but not as much. There are ticket-agencies OPEN every day, and are available

all over the central Athens and Piraeus port, as well via internet.

The ‘Holy Spirit Monday’ (Agiou Pnevmatos / Αγίου Πνεύματος) occurs 50 days after Greek Orthodox Easter

(14 April 2012), a time of year perfect for a long weekend on the islands or at a seaside resort. Pentecost

weekend is a popular getaway for Greeks. Some destinations to islands are favourite spots to spend Pentecost.

‘Holy Spirit Weekend’ is usually the first big 'Getaway Weekend’ for Greeks in general and the islands are the

ones they flock to. That Weekend, the islands will be packed out very briefly with a large number of Greeks.
